How to Layer Your Andalou Skin Care

How to Layer Your Andalou Skin Care

Figuring out what order to use your skincare products in isn't always self explanatory. Whether you have a 3 step routine or a 10 step routine, here is everything you need to know about layering your Andalou skincare.

Step 1: Cleanser

Our skin comes into contact with a variety of environmental stressors like dirt, pollutants, and bacteria every day, which is why it’s important to cleanse your face at least once a day to maintain healthy skin. For best results, cleanse morning and night.

Note: if you want to try double cleansing, go in first with an oil-based cleanser like our Deep Hydration Nourishing Cleansing Balm to effectively remove any stubborn makeup, sunscreen, or dirt from the day before washing with your regular cleanser.

Here’s where you can get creative

Any toners, serums, or treatments can be added here, after your cleanser. A good rule of thumb is to apply products from thinnest to thickest consistencies. That usually means toner, then serum before moisturizer. If that sounds like too much on your plate, no worries! This is not an essential step, especially if you’re using targeted products in the rest of your routine. Feel free to go straight to your moisturizer.

Step 2: Face Mask and/or Exfoliator

Any face masks can be done after cleansing so you have a clean slate for your mask to sink in better. Exfoliators are also great to use here to slough off dead skin cells and prep your skin for the rest of your routine. We recommend using an exfoliator or face mask just a couple times per week so your skin doesn't get irritated.

Note: If you're using sleeping masks, you can wait till the end of the routine to use these.

Step 3: Toner

Toners are great for locking in hydration and balancing your skin's delicate pH to prep the skin for the rest of the routine. A targeted toner can also help boost the effects of your other products and bring you closer to your skincare goals.

Our recommendations:

Step 4: Serums

Serums are crucial for targeting your specific skincare concerns, as they deliver potent active ingredients to the skin. Think of them like a booster for your routine.

Step 5: Moisturize

Keeping your skin moisturized is essential, no matter what your skin type is. Using a moisturizer helps your skin maintain essential hydration levels and prevent the loss of water from the skin, boosting your natural protective skin barrier and supplying your skin with essential nutrients. Moisturizer is especially helpful as we age and our skin loses its ability to retain moisture.

Step 6: Eye Creams

Your eye cream can go before or after your moisturizer, based on your preference. One good rule of thumb to follow is to apply products in the order of thickness with lighter products going on before heavier products. So, if your eye cream is lighter than your moisturizer, you're probably better off applying that before you moisturize.

Our recommendations:

Step 7: Facial Oils

Facial oils are great to add into your routine to lock in moisture and deliver extra nourishment to the skin. Your skin is naturally made up of oils, and when your skin is stripped of its natural oils, dullness, dehydration, fine lines, and irritation can occur. Adding in a nourishing facial oil might be exactly what your skin is craving.

Our recommendations:

Step 8: Sleeping Masks (PM) or SPF (AM)

During the day, the most important finishing step of your routine is your SPF to protect your skin from sun damage. Unprotected exposure to UV rays not only putting you at risk of skin cancer, but also accelerates aging of your skin cells, leading to things like fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation.

At night, a Sleeping Mask is a great addition to your routine to lock in moisture overnight and support your skin's natural sleep cycle, delivering targeted results while you sleep for hydrated, soothed, and rejuvenated skin by morning. Apply 1-2x per week as the last step in your nighttime regimen to give your beauty sleep a major boost and wake up flawless.

The building blocks of a skincare routine come down to three main steps: cleansing, moisturizing, and SPF. For beginners, these basic steps are all you need to take care of your skin. Once you have the basics down, adding in additional products like serums, toners, and masks can be opportunities to explore. The world of skincare is a lot of fun and doesn't have to be intimidating. Have fun trying new products and adding to your routine!
